The Awen experience
Awen is a Welsh word, which is hard to translate directly, but roughly means
'inspiration'. It was a moment of Awen that prompted our decision to share this
beautiful house with our guests. At Awen Bed and Breakfast, we hope that you may
be inspired to explore our part of the country further:
- The area is very popular with cyclists and walkers for the nearby Cwmcarn
Forest Drive and the Sirhowy Valley Country Park.
- We are a stone's throw from Cordell Country, featuring the sites described
by Alexander Cordell in his Rape of the Fair Country trilogy, describing the
Chartist movement of the mid 1800's
- Newport and Cardiff are within easy reach with a variety of shops and
cultural events
- Caerleon upon Usk is a short distance away, where you can visit the
Roman amphitheatre and museum
- The museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans makes for a fascinating day out,
with many reconstructed Welsh houses... including an original Welsh
longhouse, dating from the same time as Penrhiwgwair Cottage itself!
Below on the left is a picture of how our kitchen might have looked in the
17th century. And on the right is how it looks today!
