Awen Bed and Breakfast
at Penrhiwgwair Cottage
The home of Awen Bed and Breakfast is Penrhiwgwair Cottage, Pen means head
or top, Rhiw means hill and Gwair means hay or grass. So Penrhiwgwair means
the top of the grassy hill. We think Awen is much easier for most people to
pronounce, though!

Penrhiwgwair Cottage is a Welsh longhouse, built in the 16th century. Originally
the house was only a ground floor dwelling. The animals lived in half the house,
and the family in the other, with the warmth of the animals providing a form of early
central heating.

The post holes of the structures that formed the stalls for the animals are still
visible in the oak beams in the kitchen ceiling.  A plan of a typical Welsh
longhouse is shown below.
History
The walls of Penrhiw-
gwair Cottage are 2 feet
thick, which these days
keeps in the warmth
from our central heating
in winter, and keeps out
the heat of the sun in
summer.The upper floor
was added 100 years
later, incidentally!.
